Here’s How Exceptional Smiles Family Dentistry Helps Patients With Dental Anxiety

There’s no need to be afraid of the dentist! Dental anxiety can be a thing of the past!

If you have fear or anxiety about going to the dentist, you’re not alone. Studies estimate that up to 75% of adults in the United States have some level of dental anxiety, and approximately 35 million people avoid dental visits due to their fear. To make matters worse, dentists are often portrayed in a negative light in movies and other media.

We’re here to tell you that even if you’ve had a negative experience in the past, there’s no need to be afraid of the dentist—especially if you’re in the care of Dr. Eye at Exceptional Smiles Family Dentistry. Here’s how we treat patients with dental anxiety to make your visit painless and stress free.

We’re Trained To Reduce Anxiety

The Exceptional Smiles staff has undergone training to understand dental anxiety and help the patients who suffer from it have a more relaxing visit. We explain what’s going on every step of the way, and we always make sure that the patient feels in control. We also encourage patients to ask questions and agree in advance on a hand signal so that they have an easy way to ask us to stop and take a break if they get overwhelmed.

Our office is equipped with the latest in modern technology to make treatments quick and painless. Many of our procedures can be done with lasers to reduce or eliminate discomfort. We also have television screens next to each chair so that patients can watch the procedure being done to help put them at ease. Patients are also encouraged to bring a portable music player along to their visit to use as a distraction.

“There are nothing but great things I can say about this dental office. I have been terrified of the dentist too many times but Exceptional Smiles has restored my confidence in regular dental visits. I have been their patient for two years and brought all of my family to see Dr. Eye. Every one listens and is kind hearted. I look forward to being a life long patient.”

We Offer Sedation Dentistry

For patients with a higher level of anxiety, we offer conscious sedation with either nitrous oxide or an oral medication. Both of these options allow the patient to be awake, yet still relaxed and anxiety free.

  • Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas”, is a mild sedative that is inhaled through a nose hood during the procedure. It elevates the mood, relieves anxiety, and reduces pain—plus, it has a pleasant, minty scent. With nitrous oxide, the patient is full aware of everything that is going on.
  • Oral conscious sedation is another option for patients who fear needles. It is a stronger sedative than nitrous oxide and causes many patients not to remember much about the procedure. It dulls the senses and can be adjusted according to the patient’s degree of anxiety.
